Revisiting Cinematic Reverie: Exploring the BBC Series Moviedrome (1988-2000)
Step into a realm where the silver screen is more than just a passive experience – it's an immersive journey into the minds of visionary filmmakers, a realm of storytelling that defies conventions and challenges our perceptions.Welcome to the captivating world of Moviedrome, a distinguished BBC series that transformed Sunday nights into a haven for cinephiles and adventurous souls seeking a unique cinematic encounter.
For over two decades, Moviedrome graced television screens, beckoning viewers to embark on a thrilling odyssey through the realms of film that dared to be different. Hosted by luminaries Alex Cox and Mark Cousins, the series was a revered institution that paved the way for unconventional, thought-provoking, and often offbeat movies to find their way into living rooms across the nation.
The presenters would complete a short introduction to each film - highlighting the background, what to watch out for and turning your Sunday night living room onto a Film School. Remember, when originally broadcast, there were only four channels in the UK. This series provided many of us with our film education.
I only wish I had paid more attention at the time.
Why Now and Why the Blog?
Every year, I set myself the challenge of watching 52 films a year. Every year, I fail. Mainly through lack of enjoyment with modern films and a lack of inspiration on what to watch next.
This idea provides two things - a list of interesting films and in most cases, the original introduction on Youtube.
But I am not stopping there..... for a laugh, I am using AI to recommend food and drink pairings for the evening in. Why? Well, the first film is the Wicker Man and I had a strong inclination that the answer would be "Whisky".
I wasn't wrong.
Frequency
Film nights are Thursdays - starting on 24/08/23.
That's the next 4 years sorted.
