Plot Summary

The Honeymoon Killers follows Martha Beck, a lonely nurse who falls for con man Raymond Fernandez after meeting through a lonely hearts club. When she learns he seduces and robs women, she joins him, posing as his sister. Fueled by jealousy, Martha becomes increasingly violent as the pair travel across the U.S., swindling and eventually murdering several women. Their crimes spiral out of control until they’re captured, tried, and sentenced to death. The film offers a stark, unglamorous look at obsession and moral decay.

Personal History

Never heard of it.  This is what Moviedrome is all about.

Current Review

Moviedrome picks a proper cult classic. Black and White, documentary style with Shirley Stoler stealing the show with her fine performance. Like a murderous Hattie Jacques.

A simple tale of a twisted relationship. What they see in each other is never really explained. What Raymond has to offer the various women he seduces is also left to the imagination. As is what these women must think of his "sister" following them around.

Martha the third wheel
Unusually, there is no police investigation to offer any tension or change of pace. The camera simply follows them across the country.

A rather bleak ending - where Martha simply phones the police and off to the chair (never showed) they go.

Quirky Facts

Originally to be directed by Martin Scorsese, but he was replaced after a week of shooting due to creative differences by Donald Volkman who was subsequently replaced by Leonard Kastle.

A later version was released in 2006 under the title Lonely Hearts (2006) with Jared Leto playing Ray Fernandez and Salma Hayek playing Martha Beck.

The directors only film.
